In line with an old tradition for assuring abundance, the mayor of a small Mexican town wed a seven-year-old alligator on June 30. "We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river," said Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa. The reptile is said to be a divinity symbolizing mother earth, and her marriage to the local chief represents the union of people and the divine. 

The Delhi Municipal Corporation issued notice, ordering closure of meat shops in view of the ongoing Navratri festival. The Hindu festival started from April 2 and will continue till 11 April, during which no meat shop will remain open, said Mayor Mukesh Suryan. He further urged CM Arvind Kejriwal to issue similar notice, ordering to shut liquor shops in the national capital. The mayor cited religious sentiments of devotees reason. 

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's R Priya (28-year-old) sworn in as the youngest mayor of Chennai. She is also the first Dalit woman, who became Chennai Mayor, after almost a decade. Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Chairman Gagandeep Singh Bedi administered the oath, at GCC office. Furthermore, Priya, who won civic polls from ward 74 (Mangalapuram) is the third woman mayor after Tara Cherian and Kamakshi Jayaraman.

The Odisha government is likely to conduct direct elections for the post of Mayor of Municipal Corporations and Chairperson of Municipalities as it issued a referendum to the public, on August 13. The move to amend the existing rules of 1994 will help the government to decide on the reservation for SC, ST, and OBC candidates in ULB polls. Also, the statute will be called, Odisha Municipal Amendment Rules, 2021.  

A 21-year-old student from Kerala is all set to be the youngest Mayor of the nation. CPI(M)'s Arya Rajendran, a Mathematics student, has been selected to lead the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation by the party's high command. Arya was already into politics, where she leads the youth wing - Students Federation of India. After the victory, Arya said that she would be happy to accept any role that party offers her.
