Madras HC Upholds 7.5% Quota For Govt School Students In Medical Colleges: TN

The Madras high court, on April 7, upheld the 7.5% reservation provided by the Tamil Nadu government for students from government schools in admission to medical courses. ''It was to help deserving students from the underprivileged and marginalised sections of the society get admission to medical colleges,'' stated the state government. Notably, Only 31% of the seats in medical colleges were earlier reserved for general category students.

'Regulate Fees' For Private Medical Colleges, Says Congress Leader

Congress party demanded a 'regulated fees' for private medical colleges and raised the issue in the 'Zero Hour' of the Rajya Sabha, on April 5. Stating that there are only 53% of government medical colleges, there is a need for regulation in fees for private ones.  Furthermore, Congress' Jairam Ramesh said, "the belief that private medical education will form the foundation of medical education in this country is deeply flawed".

ED Issues Notice To Private Medical Colleges In Vyapam Scam: MP

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a notice to five private medical colleges, related to Vyapam Scam in Madhya Pradesh. Notably, the colleges were allegedly providing illegal back door entry to impersonators in PMT 2012-13 and also give false information about vacant seats. PM Modi To Inaugurate 11 Medical Colleges In Tamil Nadu On January 12

PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to launch 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, on January 12. Besides, PM Modi will also inaugurate new campus of Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai. Established at an estimated cost of Rs. 4,000 crores, the medical colleges in TN districts are part of enhanced medical infrastructure and education vision of the Union Government. Notably, the inauguration event will be held virtually, said PMO.
