The southwest monsoon hit India on June 8, with its onset over Kerala, a week later than normal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced. The Meteorologists earlier said Cyclone 'Biparjoy' had been impacting the intensity of the monsoon and that its onset over Kerala would be "mild". In a statement, the IMD said, "The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala today, June 8."

India will witness normal weather patterns during the monsoon season this year. The Indian Meteorological Department said, "Normal to below-normal rainfall likely over parts of northwest India, west, central and northeast regions during southwest monsoon." The government's forecast comes a day after Skymet, a private weather agency, predicted below-normal monsoon rain this year due to the end of La Nina conditions.
