Heavy Flooding In Southern Myanmar Displaces More Than 10,000 people
A senior official at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Lay Shwe Zin Oo, said constant rain in the Bago region that continued from the last week caused heavy flooding in the low-line areas of its capital, Bago town. It is said that there were no losses, but over 10,000 people had to abandon their homes. Bago town recorded 7.87 inches of rainfall hence it is its highest in 59 years.

Over 6,000 Myanmar Civilians Lost Lives In 20 Months
Recently released data by Peace Research Institute revealed, 6,337 civilians were killed for political reasons in 20 months. Published on June 13, the data also confirmed 2,614 to be injured and deaths due to regime, including the army, police and militias, while armed opposition groups were held responsible for 2,152 deaths. Since the coup, the military junta has cracked down on opposition voices, detaining more than 23,000 people.

Earthquake Of 5.2 Magnitude Jolts Myanmar
An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude on Richter scale hit Myanmar on September 30, informed National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The quake was reported at around 3:52 am, and had a depth of 140 km. According to the NCS, the quake struck about 162 km Northwest of Myanmar’s Burma. No casualties have been reported from the incident. Further details are awaited.

11 Schoolchildren Killed In Airstrike In Myanmar, 15 Others Missing
In Myanmar’s Sagaing region, a military chopper carried out air strike and firing, killing at least 11 school children, informed UN Children’s Agency. The military has claimed that rebels in the area used civilians and human shields, and that the attack was targeted at the rebels. After military seized power in a coup in February 2021, 2,300 civilians have died so far, reported India Today.

Deposed Myanmar Leader Aung Suu Kyi's Jail Term Extended By 6 Years
Myanmar's deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi's jail sentence has been extended by six more years, on August 15. A special court in the capital city of Naypyidaw has found her guilty in four corruption charges. With this, the jail term of the 77-year-old Nobel peace prize laureate comes to 17 years. Banned Methamphetamine Tablets Worth Rs 30 Cr Seized: Myanmar
The Aizawl Police carried out searches based on a specific input and recovered the contraband tablet of Methamphetamine worth Rs 30 crore in Farkawn village, Champhai district bordering Myanmar. Raids were conducted on the night of April 4, and information over the seized items from a women drug peddler was confirmed on April 5. Approximately, five persons including a Myanmar national, were arrested, and an investigation is underway.

Assam Rifles Recovers 6,120 kg Areca Nuts From Mizoram's Champai
In Mizoram's Champhai, the Assam Rifles recovered 6,120 kg areca nuts worth Rs 26.19 lakh on March 5. The smuggling of areca nuts in Mizoram is a major concern, especially along the India-Myanmar border. "The operation was carried out by a team of 8 Assam Rifles and 11 Assam Rifles on specific information," said Assam Rifles. However, the customs department has seized the contraband items and further investigation is underway.

Aung San Suu Kyi Awarded 4 Years Of Jail In Myanmar
Former Myanmar's PM Aung Sann Suu Kyi and President Win Myint have been awarded four years of jail by the country's court on December 6. They were sentenced to two years' for inciting dissent against the military and two years' imprisonment for breaking Covid protocol, said Zaw Min Tun, Junta spokesman. However, the 76-year-old Suu Kyi has been in detention since February 1 after the military coup.
