Delhi's Private Liquor Shops Will Shut Between Oct 1 To Nov 16

After adopting the new liquor policy, the Delhi govt ordered all private liquor shops to remain shut between October 1 to November 16. The government liquor stores will completely stop operating from November 17. Reportedly, Delhi currently owns 573 stores out of 849, and the rest 276 shops are run by private sellers. However, a government official said, ''Thing will improve for sure, once the new stores are open.''

Delhi HC Terms Excise Policy 2021-22 As 'Arbitrary'

The Delhi HC issued a notice to the Central and Delhi government challenging the new Excise Policy 2021-2022. The court claimed it as a violation of the Delhi Excise Act, 2009, and termed it as “arbitrary”. Reportedly, the e-tender notice filed on June 28 by the Delhi govt was countermanded. However, the new policy has divided the UT into 32 different zones, creating a challenge for the small liquor vendors.

Delhi Govt Lowers Legal Drinking Age To 21 From 25 Years

Delhi government on March 22 announced to reduce the legal liquor drinking age to 21 years from 25 years. Leveraging age-limit on the lines of the Centre’s new liquor excise policy, Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia stated that no new liquor shops would be opened in Delhi. Moreover, Sisodia stressed on equitable distribution of liquor shops to shun liquor mafias. Reportedly, the Delhi government runs 60% of the UT's liquor shops.
