Nirbhaya Case Lawyer Seema Kushwaha Joins BSP

Nirbhaya Case Lawyer Seema Kushwaha joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on January 20. The move came ahead of the UP Assembly elections, scheduled from February 10. Reputed name in Legal field, Kushwaha said, "The issues that I am fighting for on the streets right now, need to be taken to the policy level". Notably, Seema will not be contesting the upcoming election, but will hold campaigning for the party.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath Launches 'Nirbhaya-Ek Pahal'

UP CM Yogi Adityanath launched Nirbhaya-Ek Pahal programme under mission Shakti to benefit women. CM Adityanath stated that almost 75,000 women will get connected with state banks, get loans at cheaper interest rates and subsidies under PM Mudra Yojana for three months. He further stated that women can work for readymade undergarments and Uttar Pradesh can become a hub, beating China and Vietnam behind.

Centre Plans OSCs In 9 Countries To Help Women Abroad From Violence

To help the Indian women suffering abroad, the Centre has decided to come up with 10 One-Stop Centres (OSC) in nine countries. The two OSCs will come up in Saudi Arabia and one each in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, UAE, Australia, Canada and Singapore. Introduced after the Nirbhaya case, the OSCs will provide police, medical, legal, psychological support and temporary shelter support for the women inflicted by violence.

Oxfam Study Finds Nirbhaya Fund Going Underutilised, Underfunded

A report by Oxfam India surfaced that funds allocated to Nirbhaya fund largely go "unutilized" and "underfunded." The study revealed that Rs 4357.62 crore funds allocated during 2019-20 remained unused owing to the unclear mechanism. Besides, schemes like 181 women helpline, Swadhar Greh and Fast Track Courts received grim 0.07% of 2021-22 budget allocations.
