Assam Govt Demands Fresh NRC Verification, Holds Meeting

Assam CM Hemant Biswa asked for fresh National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam people, as over lakhs of people left out in the state. In regard to this, the state government held meeting with the All Assam Student Union (AASU). This is the second time, Assam government emphasized on the need of fresh NRC list, after re-verification. Recently, the state government also asked to move SC, demanding new NRC.

Assam Govt To Seek Supreme Court's Clearance For Aadhaar Cards To NRC

Assam government is set to move the Supreme Court (SC) seeking a directive to the Centre for granting Aadhaar cards to those left in NRC. In addition, over 27 lakh residents in the state whose biometrics were collected to update the NRC, of which 1.9 million were left out . ''Those from indigenous communities, have been left out of government schemes like free rice or housing," said minister Pijush Hazarika.

No Decision Yet On Nationwide NRC, Centre Tells Lok Sabha

The Ministry of Home Affairs said in parliament that the Centre is still uncertain to decide on a nationwide National Register of Indian Citizens (NRC). Home minister Amit Shah in 2019 committed that NRC will be implemented nationwide before the 2024 general elections but only in Assam. However, the Centre will consider the 2021 census to update the National Population Register (NPR).

Govt Has No Decision Over Rolling Pan-India NRC Till Now: Centre

Replying to a question in Parliament on March 17, Union Minister Nityanand Rai said the Centre had not taken any decision on the framing of NRC till now. Rai also claimed no detention centre provisioned under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and National Register of Indian Citizens. Moreover, he added that detention centres were built by the state government and UTs to detain illegal migrants and foreigners who await deportation.

SC Hands Notice To Assam NRC Coordinator For Unilateral Name Deletion

The Supreme Court has issued notice to Assam's National Register for Citizens (NRC) Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma, over a plea challenging former's unilateral erasure of names from NRC. The appeal registered by Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind alleged that Sarma commanded Citizen Registration Deputy Commissioners and District Registrars to eliminate ineligible person and their descendants from the ultimate draft.
