Kurmi Tribe Protest Enters Day 2 In West Bengal’s Purulia

Protestors belonging to the Kurmi tribe in West Bengal’s Purulia, started a protest on September 20, demanding the status of “Other Backward Class” status to their community. This is powered by assent then president Ram Nath Kovind gave to the states, to identify and specify Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC). The protests blocked railways tracks across several areas in West Bengal.

BAMCEF Calls For Bharat Bandh On May 25 Urging For Caste-Based Census

All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) advocated for Bharat Bandh on May 25 to seek a caste-based census. The protest was organized to condemn the Centre's refusal to perform a caste-based census for the Other Backward Classes (OBC). The Federation also wants reservations in the private sector for the SC/ST/OBC populations. BAMCEF also proposed that farmers get a definite minimum support price (MSP).

Supreme Court Allows EWS, OBC Quota In NEET-PG Medical Counselling

The Supreme Court on January 7, has allowed the resumption of the NEET-PG 2021-2022 counseling process of admission. The Apex Court allowed 27% quota for Other Backward Classes and 10% for Economically Weaker Section, said bench led by Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna. They also accepted the income cut-off of Rs 8 lakh for the EWS quota as per the recommendation of Ajay Bhushan Pandey.

127th Constitution Amendment Bill Assures States, UTs To Prepare Own OBC Lists

To empower the OBC communities, the Lok Sabha passed the 127th constitution Amendment Bill 2021 on August 9. Surprisingly, none of the opposition was against it, thus was passed by all the 385 members. The bill provides freedom to states and UTs to form their own OBC lists. All 671 OBCs “will be benefited now" will the passing of the bill, said Virendra Kumar, Social Justice, and Empowerment Minister.

PM Modi To Announce Youngest Cabinet List, Make Indian History

PM Narendra Modi will announce the first reshuffled cabinet of his second term, at 6 pm on July 7. According to government sources, it will be the youngest cabinet in Indian history with more women ministers. The special representation will be given to the ones who have administrative experience along with higher average education. "Two dozen OBCs will be represented. The plan is to involve smaller communities," officials said.
