Puducherry Reports First 2 Cases Of Omicron: Health Director G Sriramulu

Union territory (UT) Puducherry reported first two cases of COVID-19's new variant, Omicron, on December 28. A 20-year-old woman and a 80-year-old man were reported Omicron positive, but details of how they got infected is awaited. "Health department personnel visited the areas from where the two patients hailed and are trying to find out weather they had a contact history," said G. Sriramulu, the Health Director of Puducherry.

Andhra Pradesh Reports 2 New Omicron Cases, Confirms Health Dept: COVID Update

Andhra Pradesh Health Department on December 26, confirmed two new cases of Omicron in the state. The cases were reported from Anantpur and Prakasam districts. After a 48-year-old man and 51-year-old man reported COVID-19 positive, their samples were sent for genome sequencing. The Director of Public Health stated that the results have come out positive for Omicron. With this, the state now has six cases of Omicron.

Kerala HC Allows Online Marriage For Lawyer Couple Amid Omicron Situation

The Kerala HC, permitted online marriage to a lawyer couple. Ritu Thomas and Anantha Harikumaran decided to get married on December 23, but due to Omicron, Harikumaran, could not come from the UK. Ritu, after completing marriage registration procedure, moved the HC asking to approve online marriage. "I find no reason to deny the benefit extended to the other parties to petitioner and her fiancee," said Justice N. Nagaresh.

Hyderabad's Bharat Biotech Seeks Phase 3 Trial Of Intranasal Vaccine Booster Shot

Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech, on December 20, sough approval for phase 3 trial of its COVID-19 booster shot. The company urged the DCGI to approve trials for intranasal vaccine against COVID-19, especially amid Omicron scare. India's Omicron Cases Tally At 101: Union Secretary Lav Agarwal

Omicron cases are rising rapidly in India, taking the total to 101 cases, on December 17, said Lav Agarwal, the Joint Secretary of Union Health Ministry. "World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that Omicron is spreading faster than the Delta Variant in South Africa, where Delta circulation was low, ," said Agarwal. Furthermore, he lauded the efforts of Indian Government of vaccinating people and controlling the situation efficiently.

Mumbai Reports 2 New Omicron Cases, India's Tally Increases To 40

On December 13, Maharashtra reported two new cases of COVID-19's Omicron variant. The State Government and Health Department confirmed the cases and said, "Two new Omicron variant cases were detected in Maharashtra. One case was detected in Latur and the other in Pune. The total number of cases went to 20". With this, the total tally of Omicron cases in India increased to 40 cases.

UK Confirms First Death Due To Omicron: PM Boris Johnson

On December 13, the UK reported first death due to COVID-19's new variant, Omicron. The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed and said, "Omicron is producing hospitalisations and sadly atleast one patient has been confirmed to have died due to Omicron". Calling it dangerous, the UK PM urged people to take their booster shots as London has at least 40% Omicron cases.

Pakistan Reports 1st Omicron Case In Karachi Woman: COVID-19

Pakistan reported its first case of COVID-19's Omicron variant in a 57-year-old unvaccinated woman on December 13. The National Command and Operation Centre confirmed the news. "The National Institute of Health, Islamabad has been able to confirm that a recently suspected sample from Karachi is indeed the Omicron variant," tweeted NCOC. Reportedly, she's in quarantine at home and stable. The NCOC also urged people to get vaccine doses.

Karnataka Reports Third Case Of Omicron: COVID-19

Karnataka on December 12 reported its third case of COVID-19's new variant, Omicron. K Sudhakar, the Health Minister of Karnataka, said, "A 34-year-old returnee from South Africa has tested positive. He is isolated and being treated at a government hospital.'' His five primary and 15 secondary contacts have also undergone the test for the variant. Besides, Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh also reported their first case of the variant.

Tanzania, Ghana Added To "At Risk" Countries' List: Omicron

Indian Government, on December 7 added Tanzania & Ghana to the "at-risk" nations' list.  The two regions of Africa have been added amid the rising threat of Covid-19's new variant Omicron.  In the addition, there are 23 counties including the UK, US, and Germany are on the list. Amid the Omicron threat, India imposed strict travel rules, mandatory quarantine, RT-PCR tests, and thermal screening at airports for travelers.
