Oxygen Shortage

Shree Paras Hospital in Agra is being sealed after 22 people died from oxygen shortage. The decision came after a video of the hospital owner saying to stop oxygen supply as part of a mock drill surfaced. In the video, the doctor admitted that 22 people died after he shut off the oxygen supply for five minutes. The District administration also assured to book the hospital under the Epidemic Act.

The Supreme Court has formed a 12-member national task force to bring transparency in oxygen allocation in the country. The top court dictated they get to work immediately and streamline the supply. Reportedly, the task force will allocate oxygen to the entire country based on the need for availability and distribution. Provisioning to submit its recommendations, the court fixed the initial tenure of task force to six months.

As the Delhi is getting choked due to an acute shortage of oxygen, the Supreme Court has told the Centre to resolve this dire problem before the end of May 3. The government has also been ordered to prepare an emergency buffer stock for oxygen in four days and ensure immediate availability if the need arises. Besides, the court has directed all hospitals to admit patients even without identity-proof.

The UP Pollution Control Board has launched ‘Nivesh Mitra Portal’ to invite oxygen manufacturers for creating oxygen production facility. The UPPCB also allowed to undertake modification in existing units. While the decision came amid pandemic-led oxygen crisis, the PCB urged to start peoduction while complying with standards of Emission and Effluent, Environment (Protection) Act.
