Padma Shri awardee Rajat Kumar Kar, 88 years old, passed away on May 8. He passed away at a privet hospital in Bhubaneswar. The Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief and condolences to Kumar's family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the demise of an eminent litterateur, said a press release by Prime Minister's office on May 8.

Iconic Cartoonist, Narayan Debnath, died at a private hospital in Kolkata on January 18. Debnath (97) had been suffering from various age-related problems for several years. He created many famous characters such as Handa Bhonda, Bantul the Great, and Nonte Phonte for comic strips.
