Jay Y. Lee, Vice-Chairman Of Samsung Electronics Released From Jail
Jay Y. Lee, Vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics was released from jail on parole on August 13, expecting to resume work. "I've caused much concern for the people. I deeply apologize," Lee stated. He was arrested in January 2021 for embezzlement and bribery. His parole came after a lot of support from the public, business, and political community as key strategic decisions in the company await his approval.

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case Convict Seeks Parole; SC To Hear After 3-week
Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict, A G Perarivalan's plea of seeking grant on parole has been scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court after three weeks. Serving a life sentence, Perarivalan's lawyer was the one who sought the adjournment through a letter. However, the SC had extended Perarivalan's parole on Nov 23, 2020, by a week for undergoing health check-ups, and the TN govt provided police escort.

26 Prisoners Refuse To Take Parole In Maharashtra
At least 26 inmates locked in various jails across Maharashtra eligible for parole have denied it. The issue surfaced in a meeting held by the state committee created to recommend suggestions to decongest the jails. While some are worried over their survival in the lockdown others fear of becoming burden on the family. Interestingly, the Bombay HC recently held that no inmates can be forced to take parole/temporary bail.

UP: 21 Prisoners Refuse Parole Due To COVID, "Better Care In Jails"
In an interesting incident, 21 prisoners in Uttar Pradesh have denied to avail parole due to the COVID-19. The prisoners cited "better care in jails", including better health care and nutritious food, as prime reason to deny the parole that was being granted on the order of the Supreme Court. Earlier in 2020, nearly 11,000 prisoners were released on parole or interim bail in the state.

Jail Authorities Requests Centre To Release Prisoners Amid COVID-19 Death
Citing four deaths at Tihar jail due to COVID-19, the authorities have requested the Delhi government to allow the release of prisoners over parole. Reacting on the request, the officials have intended to decongest the jail as over 20,000 inmates i.e almost double the official capacity are currently lodged. However, several petitions among the city jails have been filed for the release of prisoners, accused of non-heinous crimes.
