Dinesh Gunawardena Takes Oath As Sri Lanka's 15th Prime Minister

Dinesh Gunawardena took the oath of office as Sri Lanka's next prime minister on July 22. The 73-year-old Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Member of Parliament has been selected as the island nation's 15th PM. Gunawardena was named Home Minister by then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in April. With Gotabaya having fled the nation and resigned from his office, former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe was chosen as Sri Lanka's eighth President on July 21.

Protests in Sri Lanka have intensified and PM Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared an emergency. Earlier, president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who was scheduled to resign on July 13, fled to Maldives, after his residence was overran by thousands of protestors. Following which, he is now expected to flee to Singapore. Meanwhile, protestors stormed at Wickremesinghe's office, and demanded for his resignation as well.

The party leaders in Sri Lanka were informed on July 9 by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he is ready to step down and allow an all-party administration to assume office. This comes after Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, called on the President and Prime Minister to resign. "No fake discussions. The President and the Prime Minister must resign immediately," Premadasa said in a statement.

Sirisena Supports Formation Of New Government By Wickremesinghe: Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) leader Maithripala Sirisena on May 15, in a letter to newly appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, said that his party will support the formation of a new government. The time and date are now being worked out for the discussions. So far the SLPP and SLFP have pledged to support Wickremsinghe. Discussions are ongoing with the 11 party alliance members and opposition political groups.

Thursday, on May 12, the leader of UNP of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe took over as the country's Prime Minister for a record sixth term. The oath-taking ceremony takes place as the leader of the opposition and SJB head Sajith Premadasa said that his party will devise a strategy if UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is made the Prime Minister of the country. In 2018 Wickremesinghe's fifth-term power brought to end.
