South Africa: Rhino Killings On The Rise After Lockdown Curbs Ease
South Africa habitats about 20,000 white Rhinos accounting for 90% of the world's Rhino population. The animal is poached for horn trading and the relaxation of the lockdown restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic last year was not good news for Rhinos living in South Africa. The cases of illegal poaching rose sharply. At least 249 Rhinos were killed until June 2021, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment said.

Extinct Giant Rhino Fossil Found In China
Fossils of a newly discovered species of giant rhino were found in the Gansu province of northwest China according to a paper published in the journal Communications Biology. The species were said to have existed 26 million years ago, were hornless, long-necked herbivores, suspected to weigh up to 20 tonnes. The fossils included a skull and two vertebrae found in the reddish-brown sandstone of the Linxia basin.

Well-preserved Ice Age Woolly Rhino Found In Siberia
The carcass of a well-preserved Ice Age woolly rhino has been found on the bank of the Tirekhtyakh river in the Abyisk district of Siberia. Interestingly, several internal organs and most of the soft tissues of the carcass are still intact. Scientists have informed that the rhino might had died at the age of three or four. They also expected that the carcass is between 20,000 to 50,000 years old.

Assam: Pobitora Sanctuary's Rhinos Face Space Crunch in Habitat
Assam's Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is facing space crunch for rhinos. Located on the bank of river Brahmaputra, Pobitora is considered a poaching-free rhino habitat. However, out of 38.81 sq.km, only 16 sq.km is available for rhinos. Reportedly, co-existence of other herbivore animals and weed invasion has squeezed the grazing stretch.
