Within a week of AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi’s West Bengal visit, the party's acting state-president S K Abdul Kalam joined the TMC on January 9. Shifting ground with several other AIMIM workers, Kalam said he joined TMC to prevent the peace of West Bengal from the "poisonous air" expanding in the state. However, refusing to acknowledge Kalam, AIMIM's national spokesperson Syed Asim Waqar said that he had "never heard Kalam’s name".
