Same Sex Marriage

The Supreme Court, on October 17, refused to legalize same sex marriage for LGBTQ+ community in India. In the court hearing, the bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, said, in a 3-2 majority, the court said, cannot make laws and it is up to the government to give legal status to marriages between transgender people. However, the SC mentioned that unmarried people and queer couple can adopt.

The court in Osaka, Japan's largest city, on June 19 declared the country's prohibition on same-sex marriage was not unconstitutional. Making the practice legal in about three-quarters of the country's regions, on September 23, the Mexican state of Sonora's congress legalized same-sex marriage. The modification in the legislation was passed by the Sonora legislature with 26 votes in favor and seven votes against. Since Mexico City became the first area to allow same-sex marriage in 2009, the movement for marriage equality and LGBT rights has accelerated.

In the documentary, 'Francesco', which premiered on October 21, Pope Francis endorsed civil unions for LGBTQ+ community. He said, “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered." The documentary's director Evgeny Afineevsky stated that the Pope made those statements directly to him for the film.
