SC Quashes Maharashtra's Act Granting Reservations To Marathas

The Supreme Court on May 5 annulled the Maharashtra SEBC Act that provided reservations in job and education for Marathas in the state. It stated that the 2018 act, declaring Maratha community as Educationally and Socially Backward Category, violates the "right to equality". Nullifying the act, the apex court said there was "no valid reason to breach" the 50% reservation ceiling put by the 1992 Mandal judgment.
