Petition Filed In Bombay HC Demanding FIR Under Sedition Law Against Raj Thackeray

A petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court demanding an FIR against MNS Chief Raj Thackeray under the sedition law. The plea would likely be mentioned for urgent hearing on 6th May. The petitioner, a Pune-based activist who runs an NGO, argues in the plea that Thackeray's remarks against NCP Chief Sharad Pawar could result in unrest among the party workers.

SC To Decide If Larger Bench Should Take Up Pleas Against Sedition Law

The Supreme would soon decide if a larger bench needs to hear the challenges against Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code. A bench comprising CJI NV Ramana, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Surya Kant has posted the matter on 10th May. The bench stated that the matter would not be adjourned. The Attorney General of India asserted that there is a need to check the misuse of the law.

American Journalist Detained In Myanmar For Charges Of Sedition & Terrorism

American journalist arrested in Myanmar's military-run government is facing fresh charges of sedition and terrorism on November 10. Danny Fenster, managing editor of Frontier Myanmar was held at Yangon's international airport in May as he sought to leave the country. If convicted, he may face up to 20 years in prison for terrorism and another 20 years for sedition. US has advocated release of Fenster several times.

Farmers Protesting Against Sedition Case, To 'Gherao' SP's Office

Paramilitary troops are stationed as farmers in Haryana’s Sirsa, knocked down police barricades on July 17 while protesting against the arrest of fellow farmers. Reportedly, five farmers were arrested and charged with sedition for allegedly assaulting BJP leader Ranbir Gangwa on July 11. Sirsa is on high alert as farmer leaders are planning to gather around the office of the local SP to demand the release of those arrested.

However, despite highlighting the Chilling effect of the sedition law, AG Venugopal overruled Ramana's request.

Lakshadweep Police has registered a case of sedition and hate speech on June 8 against a film director Aisha Sultana. Reportedly, Sultana over a Malayalam channel said that Union Territory's administrator, Praful Khoda Patel is being used as "bio-weapon" at the Island. However, an outrage among the workers broke in Lakshadweep after Sultana's remark and a  BJP leader C. Abdul Khader Raj filed complaint against her.

Manipur Journo, Activist Booked Under NSA For Posts On 'Cow Cures'

Manipur-based Journalist Kishorechandra Wangkhem and activist Erendro Leichombam were framed under sedition charges on May 13 for their controversial social media posts. Booked under the National Security Act, they allegedly implicated the promoters of cow dung and urine in COVID-19 cure on the death of Manipur BJP president.
