A commerce teacher at a government school was arrested for sexually harassing girl students, in Madurai. The accused is identified as, Jayaraman, who spoke and acted inappropriately towards female students at the school. In addition, the parents of the students raised a complaint. Based on the complaint, the Police conducted an investigation and arrested Selvaraj under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Quashing a session court's order, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court observed that holding a minor's hand or opening her pant's zip does not qualify as "sexual assault" under the POCSO Act. Justice Pushpa Ganediwala stated this while hearing a case of a 50-year-old man held for harassing a five-year-old girl. The judge said that such crimes should be treated as "sexual harassment" under the Indian Penal Code.
The Supreme Court on January 27 stayed the exonerate order of the Bombay High Court which said that groping without ‘skin to skin contact’ does not qualify sexual assault. The apex court also allowed Attorney General, who put up the issue calling it “disturbing” and a bad precedent, to file a petition. Reportedly, the Bombay High Court had acquitted a 39-year-old man who is facing imprisonment charges for groping a 12-year-old girl.

In a gruesome incident, a 45-year-old widow was been gang-raped by four men in Bhopal on January 9. As per Additional Superintendent of Police Manjulata Patle, the men barged into her house, molested her, and assaulted her with an iron rod. Reportedly, the victim is maintaining stable health after a surgery at the Rewa Hospital. The police have arrested all four accused for interrogation from the neighbouring village.
