Sikkim: 2,000 Tourists Stranded Amid Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rainfall and flash floods created chaos in the touristy place of Sikkim. As many as 2,000 people are stranded in the region, confirmed reports on June 17. The road from North Sikkim district headquarters Mangan to Chungthang has been blocked at Pegong Supply Khola, disrupting vehicular traffic, the officials said. Lakshman Prasad Acharya Takes Oath As Governor Of Sikkim

Lakshman Prasad Acharya sworn in as the new Governor of Sikkim, on February 16. The function for the affirmation of the oath of office was held at Raj Bhawan, Gangtok. In addition, Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, Justice Biswanath Somadder, administered the oath of office to Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The 68-year-old BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh  Acharya succeeds Ganga Prasad as the 17th Governor of Sikkim.

Home Minister Amit Shah On 3-Day Visit To Sikkim, Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has left for Sikkim and Assam on a three-day visit on October 6. He is scheduled to inaugurate the Eastern and North-Eastern Zones Dairy Cooperative Conclave 2022 at Sikkim’s Gangtok on October 7. A series of other programs awaits in Assam, for the Home Minister. BJP president JP Nadda is also scheduled to arrive in the Northeast to inaugurate party’s biggest office in the region.

Army Court Martial Recommends Dismissal & Jail Term For NCO Found Guilty Of Sexual Harassment

An Army Court Martial, has recommended dismissal and one-year jail term for non-commissioned officer (NCO) who was found guilty of sexually harassing a female captain. The incident reportedly occurred last year, when the female officer had visited Sikkim for a river rafting course. The accused reportedly entered the official accommodation of the female officer, and made “sexually coloured” remarks.

Tourist, Driver Fall Into River While Clicking Photos In Sikkim; Driver Found, Tourist Missing

In North Sikkim, the body of a local driver who fell down to river bed from Rit Chu Bridge while clicking pictures, has been recovered by Indo-Tibetan Border Police, on June 9. Reportedly, while clicking pictures, a tourist, and a driver lost balance and fell from the bridge. A search is on to find the missing tourist. Furthermore, the tourist who hailed fro Bihar's Patna, was holidaying with family.

Former CM B.B. Gurung Passes Away At 92: Sikkim

Sikkim's former CM B.B. Gurung (92) breathed his last at his residence in Limsui, Gangtok, on March 28. The third Chief Minister of the state is now survived by two sons and a daughter. According to his family, he succumbed to old age-related ailments. In honour of the life he lived, the state of Sikkim has announced a Seven day mourning. "Will forever be indebted to him," said current CM.

Sikkim Govt Plans To Lift COVID-19 Curbs Amid Dip In Daily Infections

Amid a decline in daily Coronavirus infections, the Sikkim government has announced to lift the COVID-induced restrictions in the state. The state government in Sikkim has decided to allow markets, shops, and commercial establishments to function as normal. In addition, education institutions are allowed to remain open and functional. Notably, Sikkim recorded 541 active cases of COVID 19 infection, in the last 24 hours.

Earthquake Of 3.7 Magnitude Strikes Sikkim's Ravangla

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said that Sikkim's Ravangla was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 on the Richter scale in the wee hours of January 5. The epicentre of the quake was recorded at 12 kilometres north of Ravangla. It occurred at a depth of five kilometers from the surface. So far, any death and damage to property have not been reported.

Sikkim's Lachung Received Earthquake Of 4.3 Magnitude

North Sikkim's Lachung received an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude on September 29 on the Ritcher scale around 9:04 AM. However, National Center for Seismology stated in a tweet that the earthquake's magnitude was 4.3 and the Location was 623 km in the north of Lachung, Sikkim. Moreover, Assam's Tezpur also received 3.2 magnitude earthquake strikes in the early hours of September 28.

Footballer Bhaichung Bhutia Criticize Sikkim's CM Over ILP

The national football icon and Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) chief Bhaichung Bhutia on August 19 criticized the CM Prem Singh Tamang as he refused to raise demand with the center of Inner Line Permit (ILP) to Sikkim. Bhutia also attacked CM saying he allowed the center to ''dilute the provisions of article 371F''. The demand says Sikkim should be granted ILP as it has international borders like Northeastern states.
