A 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted the Sikkim-Nepal border on April 5 night. While the tremors were felt at several parts of West Bengal, Assam, and Bihar, the National Center for Seismology stated of no aftershocks as the magnitude was below 6. Reportedly, the earthquake occurred at 8:49PM, having epicenter at 25-km east-southeast of Gangtok with a depth of 10 Km. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

To boost the income of Sikkim farmers, scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have begun a project that cultivates 'Shiitake' - an enhanced variety of Mushroom. Reportedly, Shiitake is sold at Rs 3000/kg in the Delhi markets since it has a "very good smoky and meaty flavour". Amid the already soured bilateral relationship, Indian and Chinese Army physically clashed once again in Sikkim's Naku La three days ago. Sikkim's Yangyang village has successfully harvested the first crop of saffron under a pilot project. An official from Department of Science said the sowing area of saffron will be increased ten times from current 1000m² post quality assessment. West Bengal's hill stations Kalimpong and Darjeeling have resumed tourism activities after a 6-month shutdown. The state government has permitted hotels to resume their services while adhering to the social distancing norms and maintaining hygiene. Besides, Sikkim, one of the first states in the country to ban the entry of tourists, is also set to be reopened in October. Sikkim had banned tourists since March 16, 2020.
