Following a backlash against the service when firms in India began using it for unwanted marketing, Google has blocked Rich Communication Services (RCS) in India. RCS is a messaging system that intends to replace SMS by allowing users to send richer, more engaging messages, which are impossible to transmit over SMS. Google stated that disabling RCS in India is a temporary measure and will endeavor to enhance the user experience. 

Google is seeking permission from some Android users to access their SMS messages, reported AndroidPolice. Google is asking users to "donate" their SMS messages as part of a testing process for their "Categories feature" in the app, as per sources. A prompt read, "Help your app sort better with message donations to Google". Reportedly, users can select the messages they wish to share.

To implement new regulations, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has suspended telecom service provider SMSes for a week to allow registrations of messaging organisations. Touted as 'scrubbing', the norm eyes to verify the content of the SMSes before delivery.
