IMD Predicts Snowfall & Light Rainfall In Jammu & Kashmir

The IMD predicted rainfall and snowfall for the next 48 hours, on January 17. Due to the cold waves and western disturbance at Himalayas, the region of South Kashmir and Jammu are likely to witness lowest temperature with snowfall until January 19. Notably, Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir reported the lowest 1° Celsius, on January 17. Gulmarg in North Kashmir reported a temperature of -4.6° Celsius.

Jammu-Srinagar Highway Open For One-way Traffic Amid Heavy Snowfall: J&K

The Jammu-Srinagar highway shall remain open for only one-way traffic on January 15, from 9 am to 1 pm for light motors. "No vehicles will be allowed before and after the timings from Nagrota in Jammu, strictly," said Traffic Inspector Rakesh Kumar. The highway was closed due to heavy snowfall and landslides. Reportedly, many truck drivers who got stuck on the highway blamed transport management authorities for their losses.

268 Flights Cancelled In 5 Days At Srinagar Airport Due To Poor Visibility

Amid poor visibility due to inclement weather, over 53 flights are being cancelled on a daily basis at the Kashmir's Srinagar airport for the last five days. A total of 268 flights were cancelled since January 4 including 134 from Srinagar to various destinations, airport spokesman said. Meanwhile, the disruptions have left travelers disappointed, especially tourists, many of whom have been stranded in the valley.

Normal Life In Rajouri, Poonch Affected Due To Inclement Weather: J&K

Rains lashed twin districts of Rajouri & Poonch in Jammu, while higher reaches received snowfall on January 4, due to which normal life was affected. The low lying areas of twin districts received rainfall of moderate intensity. Meanwhile, higher reaches registered a decline in temperature, following rainfall coupled with snowfall. Flights Delayed, Roads Shut Amid Snowfall In Kashmir

Several roads in far-off areas of Kashmir closed, while flights were delayed at Srinagar airport, after Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall. An official has said that Srinagar recorded rain and snowfall of 7.1 mm since overnight till morning of January 4. Notably, Kashmir valley is currently under the grip of 40 day long harsh period of winter,  which will be followed by a 20 day long "Chilla Baccha".

Sonamarg-Zojila Road Closes Due To Snowfall In Kashmir

The Sonamarg-Zojila road in Kashmir has been closed by authorities on January 3, after upper reaches of Ganderbal district received fresh snowfall. Keeping in view slippery condition and fresh snowfall, Sonamarg-Zojila road has been closed as a precautionary measure, an official said. The officials in the district have said that men and machinery are on job to restore traffic.

Temperature In Kupwara Drops To -4.4°C, Snowfall Expected In Kashmir

Temperature in the Kashmir valley will drop further over the next few days, said officials on December 30. Reportedly, the minimum temperature in Kupwara in north Kashmir reached minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department also predicted light rain/snow at a few places for two days starting from January 1. However, the valley is witnessing Chilla-i-Kalan or the harshest 40-day winter which begins on December 21.

Kashmir Witnesses Fresh Spell Of Snowfall In Every 2 Days: MeT

Kashmir reported the minimum temperature below freezing, due to which snowfall is to occur every third day from December 26, said MeT Office. The minimum temperature of Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam was recorded -1.8°, -7.5°, and -5.1° Celsius. Currently, Kashmir valley is under the grip of a 40-day 'Chilla-i-Kalan',  a cold wave, which drops the temperature and freezes water bodies.  'Chilla-i-Kalan' will end on January 31, said MeT.

Himachal: 300 Tourists Stranded Near Atal Tunnel Owing To Snowfall

Nearly 300 tourists have been rescued near the world's longest Atal Tunnel at Rohtang after heavy snowfall blocked the tunnel. The Lahaul-Spiti Police, with the help of Kullu police, has sent around 70 vehicles to rescue the travellers. Reportedly, the rescue operations began in the evening of January 2, and continued till the wee hours of January 3. Moreover, the meteorological department has warned heavy snowfall in the upcoming days.
