Sri Lanka’s top court has giving permission for proceedings against former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. This has come after rights group Transparency International filed a case against Rajapaksa, holding him accountable for the island nation’s worst financial crisis in more than seven decades. The court has also agreed to entertain proceedings against former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka received the first tranche of food assistance worth USD 1.5 million from the government of Japan, on August 30. This has come as per the promise made by Japan earlier this year, through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Reportedly, over six million Sri Lankans (roughly 30% of the total population), are facing a grim food crisis.

Eight Sri Lankan Refugees Arrive At Tamil Nadu’s Dhanushkodi

Eight Sri Lankan refugees arrived at Tamil Nadu’s Dhanushkodi at around 2 am, on August 22. The persons include three men, three children and two women. The refugees are from three families, and they reportedly hail from Jaffna, Talaimannar and Trincomalee. An investigation is underway, and the Coastal Security Group police is currently investigating the matter. Further details are awaited.

India To Give Sri Lanka Navy Dornier Maritime Surveillance Aircraft

India will give a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft to the Sri Lankan Navy in a ceremony attended by President Ranil Wickremesinghe on August 15. Vice Admiral S N Ghormade, accompanied by Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Gopal Baglay, will hand over the maritime surveillance aircraft to the Sri Lankan Navy. The event will be held at the Sri Lanka Airforce station in Katunayake.
