Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa To Be Sued; Sri Lankan Court Allows Proceedings
Sri Lanka’s top court has giving permission for proceedings against former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. This has come after rights group Transparency International filed a case against Rajapaksa, holding him accountable for the island nation’s worst financial crisis in more than seven decades. The court has also agreed to entertain proceedings against former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa To Return To Sri Lanka On September 3
Former president of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa, will reportedly end his self-imposed exile on September 3, and return to his home land. Rajapaksa has been living in a Thai hotel as a virtual prisoner. Rajapaksa fled the country as his residence was outrun by agitated citizens. The island nation is facing the worst political turmoil recorded in the nation’s history, followed by an economic crisis, with food and fuel shortage.

Former Tamil Nadu CM O Panneerselvam Writes To S Jaishankar; Urges Relief To Arrested Fishermen
Former CM of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam, has requested union external affairs minister S Jaishankar to take necessary steps for the release of Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. He urged the union minister via letter, stating that he is concerned about the well-being of Tamil fishermen who get arrested often. Recently, on August 10 and 22 some fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy.

India Sends 21,000 Tonnes Of Fertilisers To Sri LankanAs Humanitarian Assistance
Amid the ongoing Sri Lankan crisis, India has donated around 21,000 tonnes of fertilisers to the crisis-ridden nation. Notably, India supplied 44,000 tonnes of fertilisers to Sri Lanka in the previous month. With this, India has provided support to the island nation worth USD 4 billion. The economic crisis in Sri Lanka continues to stay grim, with UN warning that 5.7 million people in Sri Lanka “require immediate humanitarian assistance”.

Eight Sri Lankan Refugees Arrive At Tamil Nadu’s Dhanushkodi
Eight Sri Lankan refugees arrived at Tamil Nadu’s Dhanushkodi at around 2 am, on August 22. The persons include three men, three children and two women. The refugees are from three families, and they reportedly hail from Jaffna, Talaimannar and Trincomalee. An investigation is underway, and the Coastal Security Group police is currently investigating the matter. Further details are awaited.

Ex Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa Applies For Green Card To Move To Us
Former Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who was ousted from the country, has applied for a green card to permanently make a shift to the United States of America. Rajapaksa’s lawyer stated that the application for green card has been submitted on the grounds that ex president’s wife Loma is a green card holder. Meanwhile, Rajapaksa who is stationed in Thailand, will reportedly return to Sri Lanka on August 25.

India To Give Sri Lanka Navy Dornier Maritime Surveillance Aircraft
India will give a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft to the Sri Lankan Navy in a ceremony attended by President Ranil Wickremesinghe on August 15. Vice Admiral S N Ghormade, accompanied by Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Gopal Baglay, will hand over the maritime surveillance aircraft to the Sri Lankan Navy. The event will be held at the Sri Lanka Airforce station in Katunayake.
