Central Government Imposes Limitations On Sugar Exports
Central government put constraints on sugar exports of up to 100 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) from June 1 to October 31. This is to ensure domestic supply and price stability throughout the 2021-22 sugar season (October-September). Exports will be permitted only with the specific consent of the Directorate of Sugar under the Department of Food and Public Distribution. This year's sugar season has seen the largest sugar export in history.

Human Milk Can Be Used To Treat Infections In Newborn
According to the researchers, Human Milk Oligosaccharides, "which are short strings of sugar molecules found in breast milk" have been proven to be effective in preventing Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections in human cells and tissues. GBS is a major cause of blood infections and stillbirth in infants. Although antibiotics are regularly used to treat or prevent GBS infections, the bacteria are growing more resistant.

Brazil Witnesses Worst Dry Spell In 91 Years; Drought Alert Issued
The Brazilian government has issued a drought alert as the country is expecting to face one of the worst dry spells in 91 years. Experts say, the dry spell is likely to cause water scarcity, agricultural crisis, and possible Amazon fires. Reportedly, the drought alert has been issued for the period between June to September. It may also affect the production of sugar and coffee in Brazil, opined the experts.

Pakistan Takes U-Turn To Resume India Imports After Political Recoil
Pakistan PM Imran Khan rejected the Economic Coordination Committee's decision to trade with India on April 1. Reportedly, the ECC on March 31 decided to resume import of cotton and sugar from India after two years. While Pakistan did not cite any reason for the unilateral U-turn, the imports were notably blocked since the Centre scrapped Article 370. The imports were earlier nodded as both armies committed to a ceasefire along LAC.

Pune: Waiter Serves Caustic Soda Instead Of Sugar To Child
In a tragic incident, a 4-year-old boy had burnt his tongue after a waiter had offered caustic soda as a mouth freshener instead of sugar. Reportedly, the Pune-based boy was admitted in the ICU for two days after the incident. The boy's pathological report has mentioned that he suffered a corrosive injury in the mid and distal oesophagus. Police have filed a case on the restaurant and are identifying the waiter.

Government Increases Time Limit For Sugar Mills To Export Mandatory Quota
The Centre on September 28 extended the deadline till December for sugar mills to export the least mandatory quantity of sugar this year. Reportedly, the extension has been granted since the mills faced logistics issues during the COVID-19 lockdown. Food Ministry's Joint Secretary Subodh Kumar Singh stated, “Out of 6 million tonnes, 5.7 million tonnes of sugar have been contracted. And about 5.6 million tonnes have been moved from mills.”
