The sugarcane crushing season for 2022-23 in Maharashtra is set to begin on October 15 instead of October 1. The decision was taken during high-level meeting chaired by Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, in view of the ongoing rains mainly in the sugarcane-growing areas of the state. The meeting was held on September 19, at the Maharashtra Secretariat. Notably, Maharashtra is the third largest sugarcane producer in the world.

Demanding to clear the sugarcane dues and increase the crop price, farmers in Punjab have staged a protest blocking the highway and railway track in Punjab's Jalandhar on August 21. ''If the government doesn't hold talks with us by today evening, then we'll give Punjab Bandh call,'' said MS Rai BKU-Doaba. Earlier on August 20, the farmers staged the protest against the state government for an indefinite period.
