Supreme Court has given the Gujarat government notice in response to a petition for bail filed by self-described godman Asaram Bapu, who cited his advanced age and failing health as reasons. A bench of Justices asked Gujarat for a response and scheduled the case for hearing on September 7. Varavara Rao, Telugu poet and activist who is charged in the Elgar Parishad case, has been given six-month medical bail by Supreme Court. The 82-year-old petitioner was under home arrest since 2018. Bombay High Court noticed that the petitioner had health problems. “The appellant shall not misuse his liberty and not get in touch with any of the co-accused or try to influence the course of the investigation,” SC stated.
