Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

As the Tokyo Paralympics Games 2020 finished in Japan on September 5, India performed excellently and secured 24th place out of 162 nations. India had sent 54 para-athletes in the games and managed to win 19 medals, including 5 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals. Reportedly, India has won only 12 medals since 1968 so far. While China topped the ranking with 207 medals and 96 gold.

Indian Para badminton, Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj, has become the first-ever IAS officer to win silver in men's singles SL4 class final at the Tokyo Paralympics on September 5. Yathiraj lost his final against France's Lucas Mazur following a 62-minute summit clash after defeating Indonesia's Fredy Setiawan in the semifinal. Yathiraj is posted as a DM of Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) and has a disability due to an impairment in the ankle.

Indian Taekwondo-player Aruna Tanwar has qualified for the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Paralympics on September 2. Tanwar wins over the game against Serbia's Danijela Jovanovic by 29-9 in the women K44-49kg category. Besides, with the wild card admission at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, Tanwar becomes the first Indian to compete in the multi-para sport event in a long time. 

Nishad Kumar, a gifted physical education student, has set the Asian record in Dubai's 12th Fazza International Championships for World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2021. By jumping 2.06m and fetching a gold medal, Nishad anchored a new record in the men's high-jump category T46/47. Additionally, owing to his bronze win at the Dubai 2019 Worlds, the 21-year-old Himachal Pradesh lad will soon represent India at the Tokyo Paralympics.
