Central Govt Bans PFI Amid 'Terror Links' With Immediate Effect
The Government of India banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) its associates, affiliates and other groups, amid "terror links". On September 27, after multiple raids across India, the Central Government took the decision and banned the outfit under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA,) for a period of five years, with immediate effect. Besides PFI, other fronts like RIF, CFI, NCHRO and AIIC are also banned in India.

Delhi HC Asks Centre To File Status Report On NIA Cases Pending In NIA Courts
Delhi HC has asked for a status report of National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases, which are pending in the designated special NIA courts. With this, the court directed the central government to file the report within four weeks. The order has come after Manzer Imam, an accused under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) filed a plea before the bench.

Indian Govt Declares Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar As Terrorist Under UAPA
The Indian Government declared militant Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar alias 'Mushtaq Latram' as a "terrorist" under the UAPA. Zargar broke JKLF in the 1990s, and formed his own Al-Umar Mujahideen terror group. He was one of the terrorists released in exchange for passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814 in 1999. With this, Mushtaq is the fourth individual, designated as a terrorist by the Centre in one week.

Gujarat Court Convicts 49 Accused In 2008 Bomb Blast, Reserve Sentence
A special Gujarat Court, on February 8, convicted 49 accused in 2008 Gujarat Bomb Blast. The incident which took 56 lives and left 200 injured will get judgement. As per reports, of the 77 accused, the court acquitted 28 and convicted 49 for sentence, reserved for February 9. The case was registered under UAPA Act, Section 320 of IPC, Criminal Conspiracy and 1,163 witnesses during the trials of court.

42 Terrorist Organisations Listed Under UAPA 1st Schedule, Says Nityanand Rai

Over 50% Of J&K Detainees Under UAPA, PSA Are Still In Jail, Report Claims
Official reports revealed that more than 2,300 people were booked in J&K under the UAPA in 2019 with 46% of them still in jail. Similarly, 30% out of the 954 people under the Public Safety Act (PSA) are still locked up. However, around 5500 people were detained in 2019 as preventive custody under section 107 of the CrPc, which has been released as per the Home Department.

Anti-terror Law Should Not Be Misused For Quelling Dissent: Justice Chandrachud
While speaking at the Indo-US Joint Summer Conference, Supreme Court Justice Dr Chandrachud on July 12 stated that the Anti-terror law should not be "misused for quelling dissent". "Deprivation of liberty for even a single day is one too many. We must always be mindful of the deeper systemic issues of our decisions," he added. These remarks come amid the outrage over many unjustified arrests under the UAPA.

High Court Grants Bail To Delhi Riots Accused Under UAPA
The accused, Iqbal Tanha, Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the Delhi riots have been granted bail by the Delhi High Court on June 15. The bail is subjected to a personal bond of ₹50,000, submission of their passports, and two local sureties. Police have asked the accused not to indulge in any such activity that becomes an obstacle in the investigation.
