Maha Minister Tests COVID Positive After State Legislature's Winter Session
Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad has tested positive for COVID-19, on December 28. She attended the winter session of the State Legislative Council on December 27, and also visited Uttar Pradesh recently. She stated that she has "mild symptoms", and has asked those who were in close proximity with her to take precautionary measures. Notably, Gaikwad had contracted the virus for the first time, last year.

Veteran Maharashtra Congress Leader Eknath Gaikwad Dies Of COVID
Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Eknath Gaikwad passed away on April 28 at the age of 81 in Mumbai. Reportedly, the minister had tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to a private hospital where he breathed his last. Father of current Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, Eknath had served as a member of the 14th and 15th Lok Sabha from Dharavi constituency.

Maha Government Postpones Class X, XII State Board Exams To May-June
The Maharashtra government has postponed the grade X and XII Maharashtra state board examinations to May and June, 2021 respectively. Citing fresh surge in the COVID-19 cases, the state’s education minister Varsha Gaikwad in a video message said, "We will ask the other boards to follow decision that the state board has taken." The board exams for HSC and SSC were earlier scheduled to start from April 23 and 29.

Maha Govt Asks Schools to Conduct RT-PCR Tests For Teachers Before Reopening
The Maharashtra government has mandated conduction of RT-PCR tests on all school teachers between November 17-22. Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad announced that before schools commence post Diwali holidays from November 23, teachers will be tested to curb the spread of the virus. Maharashtra Govt Decides To Reopen Schools From November 23
The Maharashtra government has decided to reopen schools for classes 9 to 12 from November 23. It has also hinted a possible delay in the board exams owing to the COVID-19. According to the state's Education Minister, the board exams are unlikely to occur before May. Also, the government is keen on conducting physical classes prior to the exams. The government had also deducted 25% of syllabus for compensating the time loss.

Maharashtra Education Minister Says Board Exams Possible Only After May
Maharashtra Educational Minister Varsha Gaikwad reported on November 6 that the state board exams of grade 10 and 12 will not be held before May 2021. She stated that at least 25% of the syllabus should be cut to enable the teachers to complete the course on time. Noting that the present situation of coronavirus would not be over any time soon, exams will be only conducted after completion of syllabus.
