Declare Netaji's Birth Anniversary As National Holiday: Mamata Banerjee
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on January 23 appealed the central government to declare Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birth anniversary as a national holiday. She said,"If it happens, entire nation can pay tribute to the national leader". She called Netaji as an epitome of patriotism, courage, leadership, unity and brotherhood. Notably, Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897, who played a vital role in India's freedom movement.

Calcutta HC Directs EC To Postpone Civic Polls By 4-6 Weeks: COVID-19
In view of the COVID-19 surge, the Calcutta HC, on January 14, directed the Election Commission to postpone civic polls by 4-6 weeks. Hearing a petition, the HC asked the EC to delay the Siliguri, Chandernagore, Bidhannagar and Asansol municipal Corporations elections, scheduled to be held on January 22. The decision came at a time when, West Bengal reported over 20,000 COVID-19 cases with over 60% positivity rate.

Ganga Sagar Mela 2022 Gets Go Ahead From Calcutta HC
The Calcutta High Court, on January 7, gave a go ahead to the upcoming Ganga Sagar Mela in West Bengal. However, the Court directed the State to follow COVID-19 protocol. A three member committee, including a leader from opposition party, Human rights Commission Chairman and a representative of WB were formed to see compliance. Notably, Ganga Sagar is scheduled between January 8 to January 16, at Sagar Island.

West Bengal Govt Imposes Strict Guidelines Amid Omicron & COVID-19 Rise
Amid the rising number of Omicron and COVID-19 cases, the West Bengal Government imposed restrictions, on January 2. According to notice, gyms, sports academics, salon, educational institutions, spa, tourist places and zoo would remain closed, until January 15. In addition, metro, buses and restaurants will run until 10 PM with 50% occupancy. Local trains and malls will be work with 50% capacity till 5 pm and 7 pm, respectively.

Centre Issues Notice To Ex-Bengal Chief Secy Alapan Bandyopadhyay
The Centre has sent a notice to West Bengal's chief advisor to CM, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, seeking his response over skipping the review meeting conducted by PM Narendra Modi in Kalaikunda. Asking for a reply by June 3, the letter states that Bandyopadhyay will be charged for violating the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Notably, the violation can result in a jail term of maximum of two years in conviction.

SC Committee Pegs Tree Value At Rs 74,500/Year, Including Oxygen
