Delhi witnessed a cloudy morning during the morning of January 6, with the minimum temperature settling at 11.7°C, five notches above the average.  The Indian Meteorological Department said, the city received 9 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am. In addition, the National Capital's air quality remained in the 'very poor' category as the air quality index clocked 339 at 8 am.

In order to avoid infiltration amid foggy and harsh weather in winters, more Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been deployed in RK Pura area of Jammu & Kashmir. "We have to stay more alert in winters. Besides the deployment of additional manpower there are extra duty hours," said a BSF jawan. Besides, latest night vision cameras were also provided to BSF for manual patrolling. 

Rajasthan's Churu recorded a minimum temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius as cold conditions became extreme in the state. The temperatures also saw a dip of 1-4.5 degrees in the state. Furthermore, the night temperature in Nagapur, Pilani, and Alwar was 6.6, 6.7, and 7.5 degrees celsius, respectively. Additionally, Bhilwara and Sangaria recorded a temperature of 7.7 and 8.2, respectively. At least 2,000 people lost their lives in 2020 due to extreme weather events in the country, stated a report of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While heavy rainfall claimed over 600 lives, thunderstorms and lightening killed more than 815 people throughout the country. Releasing its winter forecast for December to February period, the India Meteorological Department on November 29 indicated that north India may witness bitter cold this time around. IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said, “The winter is likely to be harsher in north India this season". Interestingly, while the days are expected to be a little warmer than normal, the nights are expected to be colder than normal.
