Quit India Movement: 79 Years of India's Freedom Struggle

A movement of pride, sacrifice, and blood, the '1942 Quit India Movement' aka August Kranti Day foundation was laid by Mahatma Gandhi's call for India's immediate independence from the 200-year British rule. On August 9, 1942, the movement started at the Gowalia Tank Maidan passed by the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee.

The motive of the movement was to start a peaceful (civil disobedience) demonstration against British rule; it soon turned violent after the motion was rejected by the British authority, banning the Congress party. Over 100,000 protestors including Gandhi were detained and imprisoned leading to more protests throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose who organized the Indian National Army (INA) along with Japanese warriors conducted a guerrilla war against the British but failed. Eventually, the movement was suspended in 1943 due to the great famine and failure to overthrow British rule.
