Yoshihide Suga Likely to be Abe's Successor as Japan's PM: Poll

In an opinion poll on September 10, the Japanese government spokesperson Yoshihide Suga was voted heavily as Shinzo Abe's successor. About 44% participants voted for Suga and 36% for former minister Shigeru Ishiba. Suga has worked as the chief cabinet secretary in Abe's government. However, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party will formally meet on September 14 to elect its new leader, who will be the next PM until September 2021.

Japan to Elect New PM Following Shinzo Abe's Exit

Japan plans to hold a special parliamentary session on September 17 to elect the successor of Prime Minister (PM) Shinzo Abe. Reportedly, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will be deciding when to choose their next leader in its General Council meeting on September 1 and plans to meet its members before September 15. Trump Praises Abe; Calls him 'Greatest PM in Japan’s history'

On August 31 US President Donald Trump applauded Shinzo Abe over a telephonic conversation, and called him the "Greatest PM in Japan’s history". Trump gave credit to Abe for proactively strengthening Japan's relationship with the US. PM Abe, who is 65-years-old, announced his retirement from politics due to health complications and is expected to continue until a new party leader is formally elected.

Japan's PM, Shinzo Abe to Resign over Worsening Health Condition

On August 28 Public broadcasters NHK and other local media reported that Japan's Prime Minister is set to announce his resignation due to his ill health. Shinzo Abe is going through an intestinal condition called ulcerative colitis. Speculations began on August 17, when he had spent almost eight hours at a Tokyo hospital. Shinzo recently visited the hospital, twice. The PM’s successor is yet to be decided.
