American tennis player Serena Williams dropped out of the French Open 2020 on September 30 after suffering from an Achilles injury. The 23-time Grand Slam winner announced  her exit after advancing to the second round of the event. She had hurt her left Achilles tendon during the semi-finals of the US Open. “I think I need four to six weeks of sitting and doing nothing,” Williams said.

Defending French Open champion, Rafael Nadal coasted onto the second round of the tournament by taking down Egor Gerasimov (6-4, 6-4, 6-2). The second-seed claimed, he was uncomfortable with the new ball and heavy clay which made him play more aggressively than usual. "I want to play matches with a positive attitude. French tennis player Benoit Paire, after winning the match against South Korea's Kwon Soonwoo 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the French Open confessed that he was mentally exhausted after encountering mixed COVID results. Paire was removed out of US Open for testing positive and was allowed to play in the German Open despite testing positive. Paire said, “I'm tired. I'm tired physically. I'm tired mentally.”

Victoria Azarenka and opponent Danka Kovinic left the court thrice due to the cold winds and persistent drizzle in the French Open on September 27. After 15 minutes from the start, the game was suspended due to a cold temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius. Later, the match was moved to another court that had a retractable roof. Azarenka managed to win 6-1, 6-2.

Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu withdrew from the French Open 2020 on September 23. “I have come to the difficult decision to skip the clay court swing this year,'' said Bianca. The 2019 US Open title winner has not played a match since WTA Finals in Shenzhen last year, where she retired after suffering knee injury. Andreescu shared that she is planning to focus on her practice for 2021, including the Olympics.
