The Ahmedabad HC on February 18, sentenced death sentence to 38 convicts and life imprisonment to 11 in 2008 blast case. Recently, the special court judge AR Patel concluded quantum of sentence arguments and reserved orde for February 18. A total of 49 people were convicted and 13 were acquitted in the 26 July  2008 bomb blast, which killed 56 people and left over 200 injured, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. 

The Punjab cabinet, by amending the Punjab Excise Act, 2014 has initiated death penalty provision for those selling spurious liquor in the state. New Zealand mosque shooter Brenton Tarrant on August 27 was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Reportedly, such a sentence is unprecedented in New Zealand's history. Calling the accused's actions "wicked", the judge said that pronouncing a terminable term was not adequate. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also welcomed the sentence, and said, "His deserves to be a lifetime of complete and utter silence."
