38 Convicts Given Death Sentence In 2008 Ahmedabad Blast Case: Special Court
The Ahmedabad HC on February 18, sentenced death sentence to 38 convicts and life imprisonment to 11 in 2008 blast case. Recently, the special court judge AR Patel concluded quantum of sentence arguments and reserved orde for February 18. A total of 49 people were convicted and 13 were acquitted in the 26 July 2008 bomb blast, which killed 56 people and left over 200 injured, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Punjab Amends Law Of Death Penalty To Counterfeit Liquor Sellers
The Punjab cabinet, by amending the Punjab Excise Act, 2014 has initiated death penalty provision for those selling spurious liquor in the state. Amending various sections, the act makes culprit liable for death penalty or life imprisonment besides fine by Rs20 lakh. Allahabad HC Frees Man Who Spent 20 Years In Jail In False Rape Case
The Allahabad High Court on February 24 acquitted a 43-year-old man from UP's Lalitpur district, who spent 20 years in jail in a false rape case. The man, Vishnu, was serving the life imprisonment in Agra jail after a Dalit woman falsely framed him for rape in September 2000. Reportedly, Vishnu had challenged the session court's judgment in the high court in 2005 but the case remained defective till now.

Christchurch Shooter Sentenced to Unprecedented Punishment: New Zealand
New Zealand mosque shooter Brenton Tarrant on August 27 was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Reportedly, such a sentence is unprecedented in New Zealand's history. Calling the accused's actions "wicked", the judge said that pronouncing a terminable term was not adequate. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern also welcomed the sentence, and said, "His deserves to be a lifetime of complete and utter silence."
