Sedition Law Judgement Of SC Impacts States, Top 5 Cases In India

The Supreme Court judgment on sedition law has impacted many cases registered under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.) States which has been affected with a majority of cases are; Jharkhand, Bihar, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal. Furthermore, the verdict to halt filing and investigating sedition cases is a relief to top-five cases, MLA Rana Couple, Kashmiri students, Congress leader Ajay Rai, and editor-in-chief Fahad Shah.

SC Orders To Stop Filing FIRs For Sedition Charges

To restrict misuse of the Sedition Law, the Supreme Court gave a historic judgment, asking to pause filing FIRs under the 124A section, until the Centre completes its review. On May 11, the SC bench said, "It will be appropriate not to use this provision of law till further re-examination is over." Furthermore, the Apex Court said, those facing sedition charges can approach the court for the same.

Sedition Law Has No Place In Free India: Ashwani Kumar

Former Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar emphasized that in free India, there is no need of "sedition law" as it is being abused in the past few months. Notably, on May 9, Kumar said, "Decision to review the sedition law will be leading to the repeal of this law. This law has no place in free India". Meanwhile, Central Government informed Supreme Court (SC) that they will re-examine and reconsider.
