Bhopal Gas Tragedy Survivors Protest, Urge Govt To Take Steps For Children

Hundreds of people came together in Bhopal on December 3 to seek justice for survivors of the dreadful 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. They raised concern that in the absence of proper health care facilities and compensation, the condition of the survivors has been hit severely by the pandemic. Holding placards reading "Mourn the dead, Fight for the Living", the demonstrators demanded the government to take steps towards the medical condition of the victim's children. Proper compensation to the survivors by both the company and the government and actions against the culprits were other demands. The demonstrators also burned an effigy of James Ray Fitterling, CEO of the Dow. Inc that owns Union Carbide - the company from which the deadly methyl isocyanate gas leaked. Rashida Bee, an activist and co-founder of Chingari Trust, said that they have been working for the upliftment of the survivors' children and have shared the positive results of the initiative with the government as well. "Not a single hospital has been set up by the government to treat the survivor's children. But if the government makes a dedicated effort towards children's well-being, their health can improve," she added.
