Why June Is Celebrated As Pride Month - History, Significance
Happy Pride to all the queer folks! As the world is celebrating Pride Month, the lack of awareness and stigma surrounding this subject may make many curious about what it is and why it is celebrated. Every year, the Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the LGBTQIA+ community around the world with pride parades that are a spectacle to watch. The reason behind this is rooted in the incident that started this long-standing fight of the queer community for their fundamental rights. At a time when homosexuality was banned in America, the New York police who frequently raided and harassed gay bars were met with a shocking queer troop that fought back and protested for several days. This revolution came to be known as the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Ever since then, pride parades are held on the riots' anniversary which now, has become a tradition all over the world.
