Himachal: 300 Tourists Stranded Near Atal Tunnel Owing To Snowfall
Nearly 300 tourists have been rescued near the world's longest Atal Tunnel at Rohtang after heavy snowfall blocked the tunnel. The Lahaul-Spiti Police, with the help of Kullu police, has sent around 70 vehicles to rescue the travellers. Reportedly, the rescue operations began in the evening of January 2, and continued till the wee hours of January 3. Moreover, the meteorological department has warned heavy snowfall in the upcoming days.

Atal Tunnel Records Highest Single-Day Traffic In 2 Months
Nearly 5,450 vehicles had crossed the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang from both sides for the first time since it was opened for vehicular traffic. The tunnel inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in October 2020 turned into a tourist attraction now. The officials confirmed that 2,800 vehicles travelled towards Lahaul from Manali and 2,650 vehicles took the opposite way. SP Kullu Gaurav Singh said that over 30 drivers were fined for overtaking.

Atal Tunnel Sees Three Accidents Within 72 Hours; Security Ramped Up
Himachal Pradesh's Atal Tunnel has reported three accidents within 72 hours of its inauguration on October 3. However, a Border Roads Organisation official has cited the careless driving of tourists as the reason. Reportedly, the police are taking measures to improve traffic and security management and one battalion has been moved to the tunnel. Moreover, the police also intend to establish police stations at both north and south ends.

PM Modi Stresses On Infrastructure Development In Border Areas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the 'Atal Tunnel', said that his government will continue to upgrade and expedite the border infrastructure projects. These remarks came amid India's on-going border tensions with China. The Prime Minister also attacked the Congress party and said that important border infrastructure projects like Atal Tunnel have been avoided in past decades but "the situation has now changed."
