Duo Brother Arrested Under Kerala Fashion Jewellery Scams: Chennai

A jewellery store in Chennai that goes by the name Kerala Fashion Jewellery allegedly swindled gold deposits worth Rs. 26 crores, cheating around 1,689 customers between 2016-19. Duo Brother Sujith Cherian and Sunil Cherian applied for bail and argued that it was a false campaign by vested companies that led to the closure of their gold stores. However, the court denied citing the possibility of "tampering of evidence."

Centre Plans To Mandate BIS Mark On Gold Jewellery From June 1

To ensure purity standards, the Centre is eyeing to implement mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery from June 1. After implementation, jewellers will be required to register themselves with the Bureau of Indian Standards. Earlier, in November 2019, the government had announced to mandate BIS mark from January 15, 2021 which was deferred citing the pandemic. Now jewellers will be allowed to sell only 14, 18 and 22 carats of gold.
