Delhi: SC Asks If Lockdown Should Be Imposed To Tackle Air Pollution

The Supreme Court questioned the Delhi government whether measures like lockdown are needed for a few days to curb the increase in air pollution. Reportedly, a bench led by Chief Justice of India, N V Ramana raised concerns over the rising pollution and suggested a reduced usage of vehicles by 30 percent in the city. Air Quality Continues To Remain In Severe Category: Delhi

Delhi's air quality was recorded to remain in the "severe category" with Air Quality Index (AQI) registering at 436. Reportedly, the city's air quality deteriorated to hazardous after the night of Diwali. AQI in certain regions was reported to cross 600 in the city, according to the reports. Besides, the continued stubble burning in the nearby states will further keep the city in a hazardous category, say reports.

Firecrackers & Stubble Burning Responsible For Heavy Pollution: Delhi Minister

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on November 5, said that the sudden increase in using firecrackers and stubble burning  are the two major reasons for "heavy" pollution in Delhi. Reportedly, the minister installed an anti-smog gun to improve the air quality in the national capital. According to NASA's pictures, there are almost 3,500 stubble burning incidents taking place in the neighbouring states, he said in a press meet.

Committee Formed To Monitor Functioning Of Delhi's Smog Tower 

After installing a smog tower at Cannaught place in Delhi, the government has now formed a 16-member committee to monitor the functioning of the tower. The committee, comprising five members from Delhi Pollution Control Committee headed by scientist Mohan George, will submit its reports every month. Meanwhile, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said the report would help us to determine whether we should install more smog towers.

Bursting & Sale Of Firecrackers Is Banned For 3 Months: Delhi Govt

Ahead of the upcoming Diwali, the Delhi government on September 28 imposed a complete ban on the bursting and sale of firecrackers till January 1, 2022, in the capital. Notably, Several experts predicted that the celebration by the bursting of firecrackers will lead to crowds of people and air pollution amid the COVID-19. Moreover, DM and Deputy Commissioners have to submit daily action reports to the DPCC.

Delhi Air Quality Deteriorates to 'Severe' Day After Ignoring Cracker Bans

The national capital of India woke up to a smoggy morning on November 15, as the air quality turned "severe" in Delhi. According to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the areas in the "severe" category included ITO with Air Quality Index (AQI) of 461, Anand Vihar (478), Faridabad(438), Ghaziabad (483), Gurgaon (424) and Noida (466).
