Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj in a letter to Union Tourism ministry has asked to launch a ‘Covid-19 Insurance’ to revive tourism in the state. Maharaj said the insurance will "..attract them (tourists) to visit India and assure them of safety”. The letter came ahead of Haridwar Kumbh in January 2021. It added that a Covid-19 insurance policy would also attract NRI’s and foreign tourists to the tourism-backed state's economy.

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake has jolted Uttarakhand's Haridwar on December 1, informed the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). As per NCS' reports, the earthquake had a depth of 10 Km. Besides, it has been recorded at 9:41 AM, 22 Km west north west of Haridwar, stated the NCS's Twitter handle. However, no records of fatalities or destruction caused by the earthquake have been registered.
Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat has decided to organize the Haridwar Kumbha Mela 2021 in a restricted manner with limitations in the number of pilgrims. The decision was taken to contain the spread of COVID-19. He said, "Passes will be issued to devotees as the congregation will be numerically restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic." The government has directed that preparations for Kumbha Mela must be completed by December 2020.

There has been a rise in the number of Kanwariyas trying to enter the Haridwar District illegally, as the borders are sealed following the cancellation of Kanwar Yatra. Instead of using the main highway, they are using interior roads in the Bhagwanpur, Laldhang, and Narsain areas to escape checking, officials stated. More than 1000 vehicles on an average are being sent back from the Uttarakhand border daily.
