World Celebrates International Tiger Day; India Now Has 3,000 Wild Cats

To raise awareness about the big wild cats, Global Tiger Day is celebrated on July 29 every year. Reportedly, the "total population of tigers around the world is known to be at 3,900". India alone has around 3,000 wild tigers. However, due to illegal wildlife trade and poaching the ratio of tigers dropped 95% in the last 150 years but it is on the rise since 2018.

In a rare man-animal conflict, Assam’s forest officials had shot dead a wild buffalo which had turned violent in Biswanath district. Reportedly, guards killed the animal on January 14 in self-defence, as it had gone wild killing two locals. A mother bear and her cub lost their life in Odisha’s Sambalpur district after an unknown vehicle hit them on December 26 while they were crossing a road in the Rairakhol forest division. The tragic incident happened on the Podabalanda-Badmal road. Initiating an investigation, the wildlife officials have sent the bodies of the 20-year-old female bear and her 5-year-old cub for post-mortem.

Maharashtra: 60% Rise In Leopard Deaths; Man-Animal Conflict Tripled

Maharashtra Forest Department has recorded 174 leopard deaths in 2020, a 60% increase from the last year. Of the total 174 leopard deaths, 85 died naturally, 64 succumbed to accidents and 18 cases of poaching were registered till December, 2020. Gujarat Police Arrest Two People For Chasing Lions At Gir Range

The Gujarat Police has arrested two people for chasing and honking at the lions in Gadhiya village of Tulsishyam range, Gir forest. Junagadh's forests chief D T Vasavada said that they have identified the miscreants as Yunis Pathan and another as a minor. Experts Suggest Elephant Catching As Step To Reduce Man-Elephant Conflict

To reduce elephant-man conflicts, an expert panel has requested the Union Environment Ministry to lift the ban on elephant catching. The panel wrote a letter reading the country has been successful in saving elephants but need to "re-think if our forests are ready to handle such a huge population of elephants." The experts have recommended the elephants that are caught could be trained and used for other purposes.
