SC Collegium Divided Over Female Judge's Appointment In Apex Court

The Supreme Court's 5-member collegium has been caught in a catch-22 situation as no consensus could be reached on Justice B V Nagarathna's appointment as a Supreme Court judge. CJI S A Bobde and another member had recommended Justice Nagarathna's name, keeping in mind the fact that she could also become the first woman CJI in 2027. However, remaining members objected to it saying that her nomination, even under women's quota, violates the seniority norm.
