Franciso Sagasti Sworn in as New President of Peru; The Third in This Week
Legislator Francisco Sagasti was elected as the new Peruvian President on November 16, after Manuel Merino's resignation following the violent protests. The former engineer, winning 97 votes with 26 against will be holding the office, till the end of government's mandate in July 2021. Sagasti's appointment was seen as an attempt to calm the violent protest, causing two deaths after popular centrist President Martin Vizcarra was impeached by the legislators.
