India Reports 7,860 Suicides Owing to Drug Abuse and Alcohol Addiction in 2019

With the arrest of actors from various film industries- drug abuse, addiction and drug racket has gained limelight. However, drugs have been making rounds in India for a long while now and alcohol addiction has become a common sight.  According to the data by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 5.6% of the suicides in 2019 happened owing to drug abuse and alcohol addiction. In 2019, about 1,39,123 suicides were recorded, out of which, 7,860 were caused by drug abuse or alcohol addiction. Moreover, the number of suicides owing to the drug abuse and addiction has increased with time. Over 3,647 deaths were recorded in 2014, and the tally surged by over 100% in 2019, with 7,860 deaths. The data also shows that out of the total 7,860 deaths recorded, 7,719 were male, 140 were female, and one was a transgender.
