Kamala Devi Harris: A Big Tree In United States With Roots From Indian Village
Thulasendrapuram - A small village in Tamil Nadu surfaced to the world stage after Kamala Devi Harris became the 46th Vice-President of the United States. Kamala, though a US citizen, has roots to this small village in India. Born on October 20, 1964 in California to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, Kamala belongs to a family of diplomats. Her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan served as a diplomat in Jawaharlal Nehru's regime. She completed her law graduation from UC Hastings College. She became the first black California District Attorney in 2004 before becoming the senator of the state in 2017. However, Kamala was not an exception to controversies either. She was severely criticised by her own party members in 2004 for not awarding the death sentence to a murderer who killed a police officer. She also faced public ire for criminally prosecuting a journalist for the first time in California state as she allegedly wanted to cover up the investigation against her. Kamala, who created a history in US' politics by becoming the first woman, first black and first Indian-American Vice-President believes in her mother's motto - “You may be the first, but make sure you’re not the last.”
