CJI Ramana Files Complaint Against Fake Twitter Account Bearing His Name

Newly-appointed Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on April 26 filed a complaint over a fake Twitter account which was tweeting on his behalf. Notably, the CJI has already declared that he does not have any social media account. Reportedly, the account tweeted, "Due to Ajit Doval's diplomacy, the US decided to supply raw materials to India." However, the tweet has now been deleted as the account has been suspended.

President Kovind Appoints NV Ramana As Chief Justice Of India

Supreme Court's senior-most judge Justice NV Ramana on April 24 officially took over the charge from Justice SA Bobde as he was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind. Appointed for a 16-month term, Ramana will reportedly retire on August 26, 2022 after serving the Supreme Court since 2014. Ramana was recommended for the post by Bobde himself on March 24.

SC Activates Art 224A Allowing Re-Appointment Of Retd Judges To HC

In a historic step, the Supreme Court, on April 20, activated article 224A, giving power to High Court Chief Justices to bring back retired judges for 2-5 year tenure. Inactive since last 58 years, the article can now be implemented if a HC faces large pendency of cases and will not be against vacancies in the sanctioned strength. Reportedly, only three retired judges have been reappointed since 1963.

Justice NV Ramana Confirmed As CJI; President Clears His Appointment

Justice NV Ramana has been confirmed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) as President Ram Nath Kovind cleared his appointment on April 5. Justice Ramana will be replacing incumbent CJI SA Bobde from April 24. Justice Bobde had suggested Ramana's name as his successor. Due for retirement in August 2022, Justice Ramana will be the longest-serving CJI, surpassing late Justice SH Kapadia who served from May 2010-September 2012.

Justice NV Ramana To Join Office As CJI Bobde's Successor Ahead Of Retirement

Observing the seniority rule, CJI SA Bobde, ahead of his retirement on April 23 recommended Justice N.V. Ramana as his successor. CJI Bobde conferred the Letter of Recommendation to Ramana on March 24 after submitting its copy to the Centre.
