Power Outage Due To Technical Issues & Not Coal Shortage, Clarifies PSPCL Official: Punjab
An official of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has chalked up the recent power outages to technical issues, dismissing concerns about coal shortage. Sanjeev Prabhakar, the Deputy Engineer at the West Circle (Ludhiana) of the PSPCL has shared, "There is no shortage of coal in the state". He further stated that the demand for electricity has increased to "about 30 to 40 percent all across the country".

Union Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi Slams AAP Over Coal Shortage "Lies"
Union Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi has called out the Aam Aadmi Party over coal shortage "lies." This comes after AAP leader Raghav Chadhav flagged the coal shortage. Chadha had claimed that more than a dozen states had only about two days of supply left. In his response, Joshi noted that the Central Government had been closely monitoring the situation; and that there is no need to be concerned.

Union Power Ministry Amends Methodology For Use Of Coal
The Union Power Ministry has amended the methodology for the use of coal allocated to states by Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The period of coal supply has been extended from one year to three. The time frame for the bidding process has also been cut down from 67 days to just 37 days. The ministry has stated that this has been done to ensure an efficient use of domestic coal.

India's Coal Production Rises By 8.55%; 777.23 MT Produced In 2021-22
India's coal production has increased by 8.55%, reported ANI. In the financial year 2021-22, India produced 777.23 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal, compared to 716 MT in 2020-21. Coal India Limited's production has gone up by 4.43%. Singareni Collieries Company Limited reported a hike of 28.55% in production. Coal production of captive mines went up by 29.47%. Rajasthan CM Meets Chhattisgarh CM To Discuss Coal Crisis
Following the power crisis in Rajasthan due to low coal stocks, CM Ashok Gehlot met Chhatisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel on March 25 to discuss the need for more coal supply to the state. Gehlot stated, "I hope Chhattisgarh decides soon, as Rajasthan is worried." Rajasthan's energy minister was also present at the meeting. Additionally, Gehlot inked a letter to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi mentioning the coal crisis situation in Rajasthan.

Ministry Of Coal Receives 26 Bids For 11 Coal Mines In Auction
The 11 coal mines which were put for sale under the fourth tranche of auction received 26 bids, said Ministry of Coal, on March 2. The bids will soon be evaluated and shortlisted by a multi-disciplinary Technical Evaluation Committee. The ministry further stated that the qualified bidders will take part in the electronic auction which will be conducted on MSTC portal, on March 24.

Karnataka CM Bommai Meets Ashwini Vaishnaw, Seeks More Rakes For Coal Supply
Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on February 7 and discussed seeking more rakes for the supply of coal. On delay in implementation of central projects in the state, he said, "Talks are on over issues related to land acquisitions, railway projects are being implemented." He further added that funds were not released at one go. Meanwhile, the CM also met Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

China: Power Production Utility Claims 58% Loss In Profits
China on October 27, reported heavy loss in profits due to the surging coal prices. Huadian Power International, a subsidiary of China Huadian Corp, reported that the profits for January- September period dropped 58% which is estimated to be 1.8 billion Yuan. Analysts blame the losses incurred due to an incredible surge in thermal coal prices, along with a high demand of electricity in the country.

China's Coal Shortage Likely To Remain For Few Months: Experts
China's thermal coal future plunged on October 22 following the government's intervention to boost supply and ease the prices of the commodity amid a widespread power crisis. The country has been pushing coal miners to ramp up output and hike imports, thereby, power stations can rebuild stockpiles before winter. However, analysts believe that shortages are likely to persist for at least another few months.
