Covid-19 Officially Declared As Deadliest Pandemic In U.S History

The Covid-19 pandemic has officially been declared the deadliest pandemic in the history of the United States of America. This is because the death count of Covid-19 surpassed the death count of the 1918 pandemic, also known as the Spanish Flu. According to reports from CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) Covid-19 has claimed 6,76,076 lives, whereas the Spanish Flu claimed 6,75,000 lives.

Shoppers Stop owned 'Crossword Bookstore' has been sold to its Pune-based franchise Agarwal Business house on August 31. However, the owner wanted to exit the non-core business and concentrate on other businesses. The gross business valuation for the bookstore was Rs 41.62 crore. “Under the agreement, ABH will take over all the assets and brand. Any liabilities will be adjusted for arriving at the final consideration,” said the company.

26 Prisoners Refuse To Take Parole In Maharashtra

At least 26 inmates locked in various jails across Maharashtra eligible for parole have denied it. The issue surfaced in a meeting held by the state committee created to recommend suggestions to decongest the jails. While some are worried over their survival in the lockdown others fear of becoming burden on the family. Interestingly, the Bombay HC recently held that no inmates can be forced to take parole/temporary bail.

Centre Promises Pension To Families Of COVID-19 Victims

Announcing numerous COVID-19 support measures, the Centre on May 29 promised pension to families that lost their sole bread-earners due to the pandemic. The government also stated that it had "enhanced and liberalized" the insurance compensation policy under Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme to support such families. Moreover, the benefit will be available retrospectively to cover COVID casualties from 24.03.2020 till 22.03.2022.

Navy's 1st Destroyer INS Rajput To Be Decommissioned After 41 Years

After 41 years of serving for the Indian Navy, the first destroyer in the Navy, INS Rajput will be decommissioned at the Vishakhapatnam Naval Dockyard on May 21. Commissioned in 1980, the first vessel of Kashin-class destroyers was constructed in Ukraine. The decommissioning ceremony will be low-key due to the pandemic and will be attended by in-house sailors and officers. Notably, the vessel served both eastern and western fleets.
